“How do we marshal love against tyranny?”
A question posed to me a year ago now.
One that made such an impact, I titled my latest book in its honor.
There was an answer given in the moment, one I knew that was correct, but felt compelled to question due to its simplicity.
“Let it be.”
How could it be that simple?
How can defeating tyranny through love, the greatest force known to man, require us to step back and let it do its thing?
In many ways, I wish I had left the answer be just that.
Yet, I’m grateful to have explored the question in such depth that I now know the original answer was correct.
I no longer feel compelled to explore love by questioning it.
What is the point when it simply is?
There are two quotes that come to mind when summarizing the nature of love:
“They fear love because it creates a world they can’t control.” -George Orwell
“Love is giving somebody the power to destroy you and trusting they don’t use it.”
Having experienced the second quote in full force, I now feel like a rose attempting to grow a deviled garden.
I now understand why loving with full force can lead to destruction when its left unchecked or directed in the wrong setting.
When you love, expect to grieve.
It is a natural counterpart, existing as the shadowy night to love’s light.
Yet, it is this grief that allows for personal growth.
Maybe you were hurt.
Well, it was that very experience that allowed you to learn about self-respect and boundaries.
But by forcing love’s hand, you brought yourself into tyranny, whether it arose within yourself or from another who was not ready to receive love’s full force.
This duality will forever define the conditions of man.
It’s why we are here, to experience and understand the timeless nature of its game.
So instead of trying to defeat tyranny, let it be and act in love.
Even if it feels tyranny is winning, know that the pendulum will soon swing back to love when you choose it for yourself.
Love and tyranny need each other to exist.
Neither will be going anywhere for the time being, regardless of the choice we make for ourselves.
