“When I run after what I think I want,
my days are a furnace of distress and anxiety;
if I sit in my own place of patience,
what I need flows to me, and without any pain.
From this, I understand that what I want also wants me,
and is looking for me and attracting me.
There’s a great secret in this for all who can grasp it.”
-Rumi
Society’s greatest misconception is the continual chase for achievement. Whether it be success, love, or relationships, we are taught to believe we are only worthy when we’ve exhausted ourselves from a continual pursuit. We vow to “give it our all,” and I believe most say this with true reverence. However, the state of the world is currently such where most people are hardly in a position to give at all. The very notion that we are not yet worthy of what we seek creates the forever chase, leaving us to numb our void with consumption, lust, or destructive addictive forces. This is why Rumi’s words run timeless.
The great secret of the universe can also be summed up in one other line from Rumi: “What you seek is seeking you.”
Only those with the courage to venture into the heart, beyond the layers of our conditioned stories, learn the truth of our nature. Not only are we worthy of receiving things like love, we already are love. The reason we seek anything is because we are simply yearning to reconnect with that part of ourselves that’s already living within. Seeking is a call to remembrance. Once you recognize this, you will begin to be able to give love in a way you never knew possible. You’ll wake up and smell the flowers without judgement. You’ll feel the nourishment of the sun caress your skin. You’ll love the person across from you with such depth, as you stare into their eyes all you can recognize is an ocean of infinite beauty. There will be the recognition of eternal beauty, a sacred timelessness that permeates every fabric of our being, guiding our hearts forward.
Sit and reflect with whatever it is you are currently seeking. Is it possible you can already find this within the space of your own heart?
